Bloodwork

Blood tests are often an essential part of diagnosing what is ailing your pet. Blood tests can tell the veterinarian a myriad of things.

Common blood tests used by veterinarians

Red blood cells are used to determine a number of factors.  A high red cell count can indicates dehydration, while a low count can be an indicator of anemia.  Testing the white blood cells is equally useful.  A high white blood cell count is indicative of infection, or inflammation whereas a low white blood cell count can mean a weakened immune system, or severe disease states.

A wide range of Blood Chemistry testing is available at Summerside Vet.  Blood panels are tailored to the pet and the disease state that is being investigated.  Various enzymes, proteins, hormones, and other biologic molecules can give us an idea about the health status of a pet's internal organs.

Depending on the disease suspected, or the animals symptoms, bloodwork is often accompanied by analysis of a pet's urine.  In some cases urinalysis is done as a stand-alone test

Benefits of in-house diagnostics and bloodwork

When your pet is sick, you don't want to wait days to get results or to drive all around Edmonton from the vet's office to the lab and back. Our in-house diagnostic lab decreases the time and energy necessary to get your pet the blood tests he or she needs so treatments can be started in a timely manner.  We also believe it's easier for your pet to only deal with one technician and one visit than to have him or her visit two separate facilities. in some cases lab samples are sent "out of house", though most urgent testing can be done on the day of your appointment.

Having a sick pet can be a scary thing. After all, they are part of the family. Summerside Veterinary Hospital wants to ease some of your anxiety and get your pet on the road to wellness quickly. That's why we've invested in a high tech, reliable in-house diagnostic lab. Call us today at (780) 466-4030 to learn more about our in-house testing lab or to make an appointment for your pet.
