Surgery

When your family’s much-loved pet requires surgery, whether a routine spay / neuter to a more advanced procedure, we understand it can be a worrisome time. Our experienced team takes great care to ensure that you are kept well informed along the way.

With new health conditions, if we have not seen your pet previously or it has been some time since they have had a check-up, we like to have them in for a full clinical examination as well as a consultation with you. This helps to identify any health conditions or any concerns you may have observed at home. We can tailor both the surgery and the anesthetic protocol to your pet to ensure it is the safest option. If relevant, surgical options, benefits and potential complications can be discussed. Fasting instructions are provided and recommendations for bloodwork or other pre-surgical diagnostics are made if necessary.

On the day of surgery, one of our technicians will admit your pet into the hospital. This includes getting an updated weight on your pet, going over admission paperwork with you, and addressing any questions you may have. A veterinarian will call you throughout the day to give you updates as needed on a case basis.

Following admission, your pet is examined by a technician and a sedation / anesthetic / pain relief protocol is prepared. Pre-surgical bloodwork is often taken, and the protocols may be adjusted based on the results or underlying conditions. An intravenous catheter is placed, and fluids are commenced to ensure blood pressure is maintained appropriately. During the surgical procedure, your pet’s heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, electrocardiogram, blood oxygen levels, blood pressure, and carbon dioxide levels are closely monitored. If any concerns are notes, the vet is notified immediately, and the team takes action as needed.

The vital parameters of your pet are monitored following anesthetic as they are recovering and once recovered, they continue to be checked throughout the day. We make every attempt to keep your pet as comfortable as possible during their stay. If appropriate, they may be offered a small meal or even a Kong with canned food to keep them busy while they are waiting in the clinic. Dogs are taken out for toilet breaks and all animals are given soft bedding. Often our staff and volunteers love to give cuddles to the animals who want them!

At your discharge appointment which generally ranges from early to late afternoon, your pet’s technician will discuss any after care instructions. This may include medications, diet changes, exercise restriction, care of an incision, what to expect in the coming days, and what to watch for in case of complications. Any questions you may have can be addressed.

With care and attention to detail, we strive to ensure you, and pet has the best possible experience and surgical outcome with our team. Please do not hesitate to contact us at the clinic if you have any questions or require any further information.
